Sort
Sort is the capital of El Pallars Sobirà, a county with the largest protected area in all of Catalonia (80%); its highlights are the Aigüestortes and Llac de Sant Maurici National Park and the High Pyrenees Natural Park with the highest peak in Catalunya -the Pica d’Estats (3,888 m)-, and the largest lake in Catalonia, Lake Certescan.
The borough is about 105 km long, of which Sort takes 695 meters, and the highest point is the summit of Montsent del Pallars (2.883m). It has around 2,000 inhabitants and the official label of “Tourist and Sport Destination” with major sports facilities: the river course, sports hall and football pitch, adventure sports companies, restaurants, sports and shops of all kinds, basic health centre, a fire station and a local police station.
The largest club in Sort is the Association Esportiva Pallars, AEP, who organizes the sports part of this championship. Other sporting clubs in Sort are: Sort Football Club, Basketball Club Sobirà Sort-Pallars, the Wren-Bike Cycling Club and Sort Chess Club.
A part from the extraordinary river that runs through the town, Sort has an important cultural and natural heritage (Castle of the Counts of El Pallars, 14 picturesque hamlets and Romanesque churches, museums, cheese dairies, a weather station, traditional festivals, fantastic landscapes, etc.. ) as well as fine hotels, shops, restaurants, as well as some adventure sports companies that arrange rafting, hydro speed, canyoning, horse riding, bungee jumping, trekking, skiing and more.
Sort was awarded in 2006 by the Generalitat de Catalunya with the label “Tourist and sport destination”, specially to go canoeing.
